Tufts University is in the process of migrating email accounts from Microsoft Exchange to Microsoft Office 365 email. If you determine that your account is already using Office 365 email, instructions are provided below for setting up your Tufts mail on personal computers and mobile devices (e.g. iPads, tablets, and mobile phones).
Note for Students: Students who will be graduating can keep their @tufts.edu email address by having incoming email forwarded to a personal account. To send your @tufts.edu email to a personal account, follow the step-by-step instructions on the Forwarding Your Tufts Email page. If you will be graduating soon, you should also forward a copy of any emails that you want to keep to your personal account. They will be deleted from Tufts’ servers after you graduate.
The Office 365 web client allows you to manage your email, calendar, and more without downloading an application. Everything is done through your browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, etc.)
As a first step in troubleshooting email delivery problems for Office 365 for business, we recommend that you download and run Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant on the affected machine. Note that if you are experiencing issues with Outlook for Mac or are having mobile access issues, you can use the app to check your account settings, but. Configure Office 365 with Outlook Desktop Application. Prerequisite: For this approach, you need to. Don't use this article if you use a Microsoft account to sign in.; If you use Azure Multi-Factor Authentication, contact your administrator for help. Important: Until Apple's next macOS release, expected in the Fall 2020, macOS 10.13 High Sierra is still supported on Microsoft 365 for Mac and Office 2019 for Mac. After the new macOS releases, macOS 10.14 Mojave or later is required to receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote in Microsoft 365 for Mac or Office 2019 for Mac. What is Microsoft Office 365? Microsoft Office 365 provides all DU students, staff, and faculty members with 5 TB of cloud storage, FREE downloads of Microsoft Office Pro Plus for personal computers (Mac or PC) and iPad/Android devices, and the ability to create, edit, and share Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) using a web browser.
Accessing the Office 365 Web Client
1. Go to outlook.office365.com.
2. Enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]).
3. Click Next. You will be brought to a Tufts login screen.
4. Provide your Tufts username (e.g. jjumbo01) and password.
5. Click Sign In. You may be asked to complete Duo two-factor authentication.
Microsoft Outlook, along with the other Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) can be downloaded from the Office 365 website. With your Tufts credentials, you can download Office on up to 5 computers AND 5 mobile devices for free!
This section includes directions for downloading the Office applications and setting up Outlook with your Tufts email address on both Windows and Mac computers. Downloading the Office Apps for Your Computer
1. Visit login.microsoftonline.com.
2. On the sign in page, enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]).
3. Click Next. You will be brought to a Tufts login page.
4. Enter your Tufts username (e.g. jjumbo01) and password.
5. Click Sign in.
6. Click the Install Office button. A dropdown menu will open.
7. Select Office 365 apps.
8. Download the installer to your computer.
9. Open the installer file and follow the step-by-step directions.
10. When the installation is complete, you'll see the following screen. Press Close at the bottom of the screen.
11. If you use a PC, follow the set-up instructions in the section immediately below: 'Setting up the Outlook Desktop App (Windows)'.
If you use a MacBook or iMac, scroll down to 'Setting up the Outlook Desktop App (macOS)' and resume following the setup instructions there.
Setting up the Outlook Desktop App (Windows)
1. Open the Outlook desktop application. The account setup wizard will appear.
2. Click Next.
3. You will be asked if you want to connect an email account. Select Yes.
4. Click Next.
5. Make sure the E-mail Account option is selected.
6. Provide your name, Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]), and Tufts password.
7. Click Next.
8. Click Allow.
9. A Windows Security login window will appear. Provide your Tufts username in the format '[email protected]' (e.g. [email protected]) and password.
10. Click OK. You may also need to complete Duo two-factor authentication.
11. When your account is done configuring, click Finish.
Setting up the Outlook Desktop App (macOS)
1. From Finder, open the Outlook desktop application.
2. Outlook will open to a Welcome to Outlook window. Click on Get started.
3. You will be asked to sign in to activate your Office license. Click on Sign in.
4. You’ll be brought to a sign in page. Enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]) and click Next.
5. Enter your Tufts username in the format [email protected] (e.g. [email protected]) and enter your password. Click on Sign In.
6. You will be prompted to authenticate using DUO two-factor authentication.
7. After authentication, you will see the following screen. Click on Start Using Outlook.
8. Outlook will locate your email account. Click the Add [email protected] button.
9. You’ll be given the option to use Outlook with other email accounts. Click Done to begin using your Tufts email account on your MacBook or iMac.
The instructions below are for those who have been provisioned Tufts email accounts that they wish to access using the Mac mail application, “Mail.”
- Open System Preferences and choose Internet Accounts. Click on Exchange on the right-hand side of the screen.
- You will be prompted to enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]). Enter it and click Sign In.
- You will be asked if you want to sign into Exchange using Microsoft. Click on Sign In.
- After clicking Sign In, you will be brought to a Tufts University login screen. For the username, enter your Tufts email address using the format Tufts[email protected] (e.g. [email protected] or [email protected]) and enter your password. Click Sign in.
- You will then be prompted for DUO authentication.
- After accepting the DUO push, System Preferences will give you an opportunity to choose Apple apps you want to synchronize with your Exchange account. Once you’ve made your selection, press Done.
- Open the Mail app on your iMac or MacBook to begin using your Tufts O365 Mail account.
Transitioning Windows Computers
After your account has been moved from Exchange to Office 365, you may see a popup window like the one below that asks you to log in with your Tufts credentials. Log in with your Tufts username in the format '[email protected]' (e.g. [email protected]) and password.
Transitioning iMac and MacBook Computers
After the Office 365 migration, you may need to set up your Mac Mail application account again with your Tufts Office 365 email login username@tufts.edu (e.g. [email protected]) and your Tufts password. The following instructions are for updating your Mac Mail email application to work with Office 365 mail.
- Open System Preferences and choose Internet Accounts.
- If Exchange is listed, click on Exchange and then click on the
minus button to delete the account. - If you have your Tufts email account set up on more than one Mac, you will be asked if you want to remove the account from all computers. Click Remove From All.
- After the account is successfully removed, click on Exchange on the right-hand side of the screen.
- You will be prompted to enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]). Enter it and click Sign In.
- You will be asked if you want to sign into Exchange using Microsoft. Click on Sign In.
- After clicking Sign In, you will be brought to a Tufts University login screen. As your username, enter your email address using the format Tufts [email protected] (e.g. [email protected]) and your password.
- You will then be prompted for DUO authentication.
- After accepting the DUO push, System Preferences will give you an opportunity to choose the Apple apps you want to synchronize with your Exchange account. Once you’ve made your selection, press Done.
Email on iPhones and iPads (iOS and iPadOS)
If you do not have a passcode set up on your iOS or iPadOS device, please do so before proceeding with email setup.
1. Open your device’s Settings application.
2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
3. Tap Turn Passcode On.
4. Enter a passcode, then re-enter it to confirm.
5. Go back into Settings.
6. Tap Display & Brightness.
7. Tap Auto-Lock.
8. Select an amount of time for the auto-lock.
1. Search for Microsoft Outlook in the App Store.
2. Download the Outlook app.
3. Tap the Outlook icon to open the app.
4. In the Add Account page, enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]).
5. Tap the Add Account button.
6. A Tufts login page will load. Enter your Tufts username (e.g. jjumbo01) and password.
7. Tap Sign in. You may have to complete Duo two-factor authentication.
1. Open the Settings application on your device.
2. Tap Passwords & Accounts.
3. Tap Add Account.
4. Select Exchange.
5. Email – Add your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]).
6. Description – This will automatically populate for you.
7. Tap Next.
8. In the confirmation window that appears, select Sign In.
9. A Tufts login page will load. Enter your Tufts username in the format [email protected] (e.g. [email protected]) and password.
10. Tap Sign in. You may need to complete Duo two-factor authentication.
11. Determine what applications/data you would like to sync through this account.
12. Tap Save.
Backing up Your Phone
Performing regular backups ensures that you won’t lose personal and professional data if something happens to your device. With Apple’s iCloud backup, you get 5GB of remote backup storage space for free. You can also buy more storage space if necessary. For more information, visit the Apple iCloud support page.
Remotely Wiping Your Device
A lost or stolen device poses a security risk for you and the University. With iCloud, users of Apple devices can remotely locate and wipe their devices and minimize that risk. To activate this capability on for your device, enable the Find My iPhone feature in the device’s settings. For more information on how to enable and use this feature, visit the Apple Find My iPhone support page.
- Open the Settings application.
- Open Passwords & Accounts.
- Tap the account that is associated with your Tufts Exchange email (e.g. 'Tufts' or 'Exchange') to open its settings.
- Tap the Account field.
- Update the following fields:
- Domain - Leave blank.
- Username - Enter your Tufts username in the format '[email protected]' (e.g. [email protected]).
- Description - Change from 'Exchange' to 'Tufts Office 365 Mail'.
- Tap Done.
Note: You do not need to update your password.
Email on Android
If you do not have a passcode set up on your Android device, please do so before proceeding with email setup.

Note: There are various versions of the Android operating systems, so the steps for your device may be slightly different.
1. From your home screen, tap the Menu button.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Scroll down until you find Security or Security and Screen Lock and tap it. This is typically located under the Personal section.
4. Under Screen Security, tap Screen Lock.
5. In the Choose a Screen Lock section, select which type of password you would like to use:
- Pattern - Sets an unlock screen which requires the user to draw a specific pattern between 9 on-screen points.
- PIN - Sets an unlock screen requiring the user to enter a numeric code.
- Password - Sets an unlock screen that requires entering an alphanumeric password (numbers, letters, and symbols).
6. Re-enter your Pattern/Pin/Password to verify.
1. Search for Microsoft Outlook in the Google Play Store.
2. Download theOutlook app.
3. Open the Outlook application.
4. Tap More > Settings > Add Account > Add Email Account. Otherwise, tap Get Started.
5. In the first field, type your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]).
6. In the next page, enter your Tufts username (e.g. jjumbo01) and password.
7. Tap Log in. You may need to complete Duo two-factor authentication.
8. Select Yes to let the app access your information.
Please note that there are various Android operating systems (Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, etc.), so the steps for your device may be slightly different.
1. From your device's Home Menu screen, tap Settings > Accounts > Add Account > Email.
2. Enter your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected]) and password.
3. Tap Next.
4. Select the Exchange option.
5. If you see a message about additional security features, tap OK to continue. The Account Options page will open.

6. Accept the defaults or select the options for how you want to receive and send your mail.
7. Tap Next. (You may need to scroll down to see it.)
8. On the set-up email page, you can change the name of your account.
9. When you're finished tap Done.
If your device needs you to fill in other fields, use these settings:
- Account type - Exchange/Office 365
- Email address - Your Tufts email address (e.g. [email protected])
- Username – Your Tufts username in the format ‘[email protected]’ (eg. [email protected])
- Password - Your Tufts password
- Server – outlook.office365.com
- Domain - leave it blank

Why Won't Office 365 Download
Please note that there are various Android operating systems (Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, etc.), so the steps for your device may be slightly different. If you are unable to follow these steps to switch your Tufts email account from Exchange to Office 365, delete your Tufts email account from your Android device and follow the steps in the 'Android Mail App' above to re-add the account.
- Open the phone's Settings application.
- Tap Accounts.
- Tap the account associated with your Tufts email (e.g. Exchange).
- Tap Account Settings.
- Select the account associated with your Tufts email (e.g. [email protected]).
- Scroll down to the Server settings section and tap Incoming settings.
- Adjust the following fields:
- Domainusername - Enter in the format [email protected] (e.g. [email protected]).
- Server - outlook.office365.com
- Click Done.
Steps to add an Office 365 account with Multi-factor Authentication enforced to work with the Mail App iOS or Later are as follows.
- Download the Microsoft Authenticator app onto your phone. You should have done this when you first setup multi-factor authentication for your email but if you have not you will need to do so before continuing. Please follow the steps in the below link to do so https://support.office.com/en-us/article/use-microsoft-authenticator-with-office-365-1412611f-ad8d-43ab-807c-7965e5155411#ID0EAADAAA=_Step_1
- Now on your phone got to Settings. Then go to 'Passwords & Accounts'. Now under accounts go to 'Add Account' .
- Select Exchange.
- Now enter your email address and select 'Next'.
- A popup that says something to the effect 'Sign in to your 'whatever domain name goes here' Exchange account using Microsoft?' Select 'Sign in'.
- Now a login.microsoftonline.com screen should come up. Enter the password for your email address and select 'Sign in'.
- You should now see a screen that says 'Approve sign in request.'
Office 365 Won't Download
Before continuing, I have to mention that before iOS 12.3.1 if you selected 'Receive notifications for verifications' when you set up the Mircosoft Authenticator, Approving the sign on would not work. You would have to select 'Sign in another way' at the 'Approve sign in request' screen. Then select 'Use a verification code from my mobile app'. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and make a note of the code. Make sure that you have enough time to enter it in before the timer on the code runs out. Select 'Verify'. With iOS 12.3.1 all you have to do is open the Autenticator and select 'Approve' if you chose 'Receive notifications for verifications' when you set up the Microsoft Authenticator.
8.Select which options you want available to you on your phone like mail, contact, calendar, etc. and select 'Save'.
Office 365 Won't Install
You should now be able to retrieve email from an Office 365 account with Multi-factor Authentication enforced using the Mail app.
